Water Treatment Pond
In the winemaking process, water is used to sanitize barrels and tanks, to wash equipment and to clean the winemaking areas. In 2008, the family introduced a water treatment process in which used water is captured and naturally filtered, then reintroduced to the estate vineyard surrounding Duck Pond.
Used water is first pumped from the winery drainage system to a holding reservoir. It then trickles through to the first of two constructed wetlands, which slowly filter the water. By nature's design, wetlands aerate the water, promote healthy microbes and remove solids from the water.
The resulting water has been naturally filtered and is returned to the soil in a more natural state. As a side benefit, the reeds and wetland grasses provide a welcome habitat for a diverse array of wildlife.
