Vineyards

Our family owns and farms six vineyard sites in Oregon. Five of these six--Hylo, Delaney, Willow Creek, St. Jory and our estate vineyard--lie within the Willamette Valley AVA.

Established in 1983, this AVA’s rough boundaries include the Cascade Mountains to the east, the Oregon Coast Range mountains to the west and a series of lower hill chains to the extreme north of the valley. These vineyard sites primarily feature a dense, heavy clay soil called Jory and are best suited for cool climate grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Although the annual rainfall averages nearly 50”, summers are mostly dry and mild. The average temperature during the growing season is around 70 degrees and typically only 5-15 days top 90 degrees.

Acquired in 2008, the Coles Valley Vineyard in the Umpqua AVA is our family’s newest vineyard. This 358-acre parcel lies near the small southern Oregon town of Umpqua, approximately 45 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. This vineyard site features a mix of silt, clay and deep alluvial soils. The vines planted here were hand-grafted by the family and vineyard staff and planted over the course of four years, beginning in 2009.

Picturesque, undulating hills define this AVA, an area warmer than the Willamette Valley AVA to the north, yet cooler than its southern neighbors, the Rogue and Applegate AVAs. The AVA spans 65 miles north to south and 25 miles east to west. Mornings here are often foggy, with summertime high temperatures averaging in the low to mid-80s. Average rainfall in the region is 39”, with most of the precipitation occurring outside the primary growing season.

Our family also farms two vineyard sites in Eastern Washington, which provide fruit for our other wine brand, Desert Wind.
